LINDA WEEDON

MICHELLE TARANTO
Embarking on my creative journey in 2021, I established my home studio in the coastal town of Yeppoon, Queensland. As the visionary behind 'Arco Iris Interiors,' I bring to life a kaleidoscope of original artworks, with dreams of expanding my palette into fashion and interior design, captivating the hearts of those who revel in colourful, eclectic, and maximalist aesthetics.
My creations are a blend of my fun-loving and playful personality, infused with the hues of the Latin-American rainbow (Spanish: Arco Iris = rainbow), where I travelled in my twenties. Drawing from my lush collection of tropical flora and cacti, my beloved four-legged companions, the whimsy of everyday life, and a self-taught skill set, my work ranges from abstract botanicals to soulful canine portraits, often blending the two into delightful and unexpected compositions.
In October 2023, my debut solo exhibition, 'Happy At Home,' transformed the Fig Tree Galleries into a sanctuary of joy and wonder, leaving an indelible mark on the Yeppoon community. My artistic journey was further affirmed when I obtained the First Prize in the Easel Works Section of the prestigious Martin Hanson Art Awards for my captivating self-portrait, 'Modern Mother.'
With each brushstroke, I hope to spread light and colour and ignite passion and delight in all who encounter my work.

NANETTE BALCHIN
For over 40 years, Nanette Balchin has lived in the coastal community of Yeppoon on Darumbal country overlooking Woppaburra land and sea country. Nanette draws visual inspiration from this place and diverse creative community. Collaborating with artists and community informs her practice contributing to its development through networking and exploration of new mediums and techniques. Since 2005 Nanette has exhibited across Central Qld; in group shows; major collaborative shows including two touring shows across many regional communities; in Brisbane; and interstate in Newcastle and Port Fairy. Her most recent show in collaboration with artist Veronika Zeil “Hybrid Greening” has just finished touring to seven Qld regional communities. Nanette Balchin is a maker of collage, stitched surfaces and richly layered visual stories. Balchin shares her response to a place intersected with notions of optimism, renewal, and transformation by producing richly layered collages, drawings and stitched surfaces. The works portray the expressive power of colour, surface, and texture, manifested in collages, assemblages, printmaking and fibre art. Stimulating audience curiosity is at the heart of her practice. In her most recent works for the touring exhibition “Hybrid Greening” Nanette aims to enhance the ability of conversation told through artworks of installation and interactive components. Bringing together 2-dimensional native media of paint, inks, and drawing media with cloth, papers, marine “flotsam” and stitch Nanette creates fibre art sculptural assemblages formed into “hybrid forests” and wall pieces creating a distinctive visual language. Nanette believes that art in all its forms has intrinsic value for individuals, community wellbeing, societal and global harmony and transformation through creating conversations, encouraging response and action and communicating optimism through active audience engagement. This belief extends to her extensive engagement over 15 years across the CQ arts sector, being a proactive leader in many arts organisations and an advocate for regional artists and arts development. SAMBUDDHANANDA SARASWATI
I have been involved with various artistic endeavours for many years. At first I studied Fine Arts and General Design part-time at East Sydney Technical College. After spending many years overseas in Europe and India, I settled in Yeppoon. I began studying part time for the Diploma of Visual Arts at Rockhampton TAFE where I majored in painting and printmaking. I continued to attend many courses in experimental drawing, painting, and printmaking at TAFE and elsewhere. Over the years I was part of an artistic support group called ‘The Quirky Purple Mangoes’ where we taught each other various techniques and had workshops within the community and were also involved in many community projects. In the early days of the Village Festival I painted backdrops and signage and line drawings for several books have also been completed by me. I had been a member of The Mill Gallery for many years and had taken part in their various exhibitions including installing many of them. Now The Mill Gallery has morphed into Latitude 23 Arts and a new journey has begun. I was a founding member and remain active in the Capricornia Printmakers including exhibiting in eleven group exhibitions and many community projects. At the newly opened Rockhampton Museum of Art, we completed a special print using a very large roller, like one used for the lawn. We created a three-metre print, while the public visiting the gallery looked on. Now we are involved in “Collection Focus: Capricornia Printmakers”, a major exhibition with the Rockhampton Museum of Art to respond to selected pieces of the Museum’s collection. Creativity can take many forms. For me, painting and printmaking can give a myriad of techniques for expression. There is a special relationship for the landscape- its beauty and terribleness hold wonderment for me. However, I also attempt to express the ineffable by using various sacred symbols, including yantras and mandalas. A yantra is a diagram revealing the inner basis of the forms and shapes in the universe. They use the most basic forms of the triangle, circle and square and are utilised as concentration tools for meditation. In 2023 I held a solo show “Upsetting Gravity” in Yeppoon, and this showcased many years of my artworks including mandalas, yantras, painting and printmaking. |
SANDY HOHMANN
I am a Yeppoon based artist and this will be my first time exhibiting. It is a pleasure to be involved with the Latitude 23 ‘Saviour the Moment’ exhibition. As a child I was surrounded by various forms of art, my father being one of the original graphic designers, working with ink on acetate sheet to create logos for local companies and drawings for the local newspaper. Our home was constantly filled with screen printing, carvings, and signwriting. I have no doubt that this environment has inspired my creativity. While the works in this exhibition showcase acrylic on canvas, I also enjoy working in oils and watercolours. My artworks are characterised by muted tones and textures, creating pieces that invite viewers into a world of imagination and nostalgia. Beyond painting, I also enjoy exploring the realms of sculpture and silversmithing, continuously seeking new ways to express an artistic vision. To explore my work and stay updated on my latest creations follow me on Instagram. IG: @sandyhohmann_art |
SHARON KIRK
My art practice often focuses on the intersection between the natural environment and human interaction. I also reflect on memory and the traces we intentionally/unintentionally leave behind as we travel through and across the landscape. I continually explore new ways of expression and I am inquisitive when it comes to types of media. Nothing is off the table. My 3-dimensional works can also incorporate elements of the natural environment and I often allow place and the material within it to inform my decision making. I completed a Bachelor of Fine Art from Curtin University in 2019 through external online study, held a solo exhibition, Journey to the Unknown, in Springsure in 2019 and another solo exhibition Marked by the Land in Springsure in 2024. Recent achievements include winning first place for three-dimensional works in the 2021 Brigalow Arts Festival, as well as three-dimensional work and the acquisitive award in Springsure 2022. I was also the inaugural artist-in-residence at Rockhampton Museum of Art in March 2022. Since then, I have become a weekly volunteer at RMOA. In 2023 I was honoured, as part of the Queensland Regional Art Awards, to have a work selected for the Mervyn Moriarty Landscape Award Exhibition travelling throughout Queensland in 2024. After retiring and relocating to Yeppoon several years ago I have become an active member of Central Queensland Contemporary Artists and Latitude 23 artists collective |
SYLVIA NICHOLSON
Happenstance has led Sylvia Nicholson into the art world, where she is now striving to find her footing and build her confidence as an artist. Although she has always enjoyed making art, it is only recently that she has dedicated time to develop her skills and find her own unique style. Working in education, Sylvia began teaching Visual Art several years ago. While guiding her students on their artistic journeys, she found inspiration to create once more. This rekindled passion led to an opportunity for a commission piece, which in turn connected her to the local art community. Now, she is thrilled to be participating in her first exhibit among many talented artists, feeling incredibly fortunate to be involved. Sylvia enjoys painting and initially focused on using acrylics to create landscape scenes. This year, she has been working primarily with watercolours, adding touches of soft pastels. She delights in the vivid colours and intricate details that these mediums allow her to achieve. IG: sfnicholson_art |
