The 2017 Tour Arrives in Yeppoon

The Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours that takes the best folk and contemporary acoustic artists performing at two large festivals, and sends them on the road to halls in communities all over Australia. Each night on the tour is a beautiful occasion for original music, and a chance to catch up with family and friends over cake and tea during a supper break. The idea comes from Prince Edward Island, Canada (famous for its beautiful landscape, Anne of Green Gables, lobsters – and for punching well above its weight in term of musical quality) where locals host artists in community halls all over the Island during Summer. The Festival of Small Hall events are held in the lush sub-tropics of Mullumbimby, through whale watchers paradise, Hervey Bay, from Thuringowa in North Queensland back to old mates at Wallaville and through 17 other locations until they finish up in festival city – Woodford in SE QLD.
With a stunning backdrop of offshore islands, the sparkling azure of the Pacific and towering Norfolk pines, Yeppoon has built a reputation as both a visually striking tourist town and a saviour for summer tastebuds (plenty of mangos come from Yeppoon). If island hopping is your thing, you have found yourself one terrific launching pad, with the Great Keppel Bay Islands a ferry flutter away. However, if terra firma is more your thing, there is plenty of great shopping, outstanding dining and a truly warm atmosphere, but keep your eyes peeled and upward around sunset as thousands of black and little red flying foxes spectacularly fill the skies – visual, batty splendour. The Queen Street Hall in Yeppoon stands on land traditionally owned by the Darumbal people. The name ‘Yeppoon’ is possibly from the words ‘Yeppen-Yeppen’, meaning thunder. Presented by Keppel Coast Arts.

Vance Gilbert _USA

Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90’s when the buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking ’em dead at open mics. Word of the Philadelphia-area bred performer quickly spread to New York City. Then Shawn Colvin invited him to be a special guest on her Fat City national tour. Vance Gilbert took audiences across the country by storm.

Ten accomplished albums later, Vance continues to refine his unlikely union of humour, virtuosity and the unexpected. Whether with classic, original songwriting or ageless interpretations of covers, his is a presentation steeped in deep humanism and bravery, stunning artistry and soul, and contagious, unbridled joy – inarguably the blue ribbons that tie and seal the seemingly impossible package that is… VANCE GILBERT.

Melbourne’s Liz Stringer is one of Australia’s most respected and versatile songwriters and musicians, recently completing a year on the road, both in Australia and internationally, in support of her acclaimed 2016 LP “All The Bridges”. Recorded in Portland, Oregon, USA at Type Foundry Studio, and released independently in Australia and in North America through Toronto’s Roaring Girl Records,  “All The Bridges” has continued to solidify Stringer’s reputation for the highest quality musicianship, creative autonomy and intensely moving live shows.

A passionate advocate of independent music and extensive regional touring, Liz has become a favourite among punters across Australia for her generous and engaging stage demeanour and her skill as a storyteller. Her powerful and emotive live performances and melodically rich, story based songs have delighted audiences and festival goers around the country on national tours with the likes of The Waifs, Eric Bibb, Mia Dyson, Ron Sexsmith and The East Pointers.

With heartfelt, meaningful and sometimes haunting lyrics she portrays an honesty and vulnerability in her songs that resonate deeply with her listeners.

After many years of writing songs behind closed doors, Kate attended and graduated from the 2017 CMAA Academy of Country Music with new determination and passion to pursue her music career. Kate has performed on numerous stages including Tropical Bloom (2107, The Creek Sessions (2017) and The Village Festival (2017).

The essential Artist Workshop

Vance Gilbert’s Collision Course Workshop

Picture
There are great songs out there that you’ll never hear because they are “under-performed” by the artists. And there are great artists out there that have all the chops in the world but short shelf lives in the eyes of the listener because they perform songs that need “tweaking.” And there are some situations where a little stage work on both can bring a performance to life! Vance’s Collision Course Workshop offers you the opportunity to take an instructive, simultaneous look at your performance skills and your songwriting in an “open mike” stage setting. That’s where it all finally happens, right?

Vance believes that your performance and your songwriting are inseparably intertwined. In this revolutionary workshop your whole presentation - from adjusting the microphone, stage patter, eye contact, song arrangement, lyric tweak, and approach to the instrument - all will be reviewed, gently critiqued, and adjusted in real time by Vance in the supportive stage setting of other singer-songwriter students, one of who will be “next” to take the stage. It’s all entertaining and great fun. It doesn’t matter your level - Vance has worked with everyone from rote beginners to David Wilcox.

So why not come and give yourself and your music the gift of being heard at your best!! Show up with your instrument, a song you know needs a good looking at to be stage ready, and let's get to work.
