THE PROJECT
RETURNING CROSS CULTURE has grown out of the relationship
developed between Central Queensland Indigenous artists and their New Zealand Maori counterparts, through a cultural exchange residency held in the Gladstone region in 2010, and reciprocal visits to New Zealand for the Toi Ngapuhi 2012 and Kokiri Putahi, the 7th International Gathering of Indigenous Artists in 2014, which attracted over 40,000 visitors to each.
This residency Returning Cross Culture: Blending our Identities allows the artists to share their cultures and develop collaborative works for exhibition.
Objectives:
• To bring together artists from Maori and Aboriginal cultures for artform, professional development and cultural exchange
• To support these artists in an exploration of cultural identity through the creation of works for public exhibition
• To develop the exchange program with first peoples that will be ongoing
• Expanded the network of Aboriginal artists across central Queensland
• Increased visibility for New Zealand Maori and regional Aboriginal art through marketing and exhibition
• Building the capacity for Indigenous artists, arts and mainstream regional cultural service providers to work together and develop mutually productive partnerships
‘Returning Cross Culture: Blending our identities 2015’ the logo leaf is a combination of the Byfield Fern and the Silver Fern, journey of two boomerangs returning to country.
Logo concept by Howard (Joe) Butler and designed by Trey Butler.
