Throughout May and June, the creativity of Central Queensland communities will be celebrated through the Shine Bright Festival. The festival will shine a spotlight on regional talent through a curated program of events. A first of its kind, this cross regional festival will be celebrated across 14 diverse regions, from as far north as The Whitsundays, down to the South Burnett and out west to the Central Highlands.
Communities will shine through a program of events including live performance, exhibitions, animated projected artworks, open studios, workshops and more. The Shine Bright Festival will be encouraging audiences to get out and explore the incredible creativity that thrives across Central Queensland.

SHINE BRIGHT THE CREEK SESSIONS

The Creek Sessions are a relaxed Sunday afternoon “performance session” held on the banks of Fig Tree Creek (at the KCA Artship) in Yeppoon. The Creek Sessions feature musicians, poets, authors, actors, multimedia artists and performers scheduled over nine performance dates from July 2017 to April 2020, extended due to Covid restrictions to a final date of May16, 2021. This collaborative, innovative and supportive arts and performance program presents new and original material from both working and emerging artists. This is a great opportunity to present new material, and a great way to develop performance, presentation, material development and expression skills through workshops and collaboration, not to mention a terrific afternoon of entertainment for performance enthusiasts! The Shine Bright Studio Open Day is your opportunity to step inside the working studios of 4 well known local artists and explore how they work, watch the processes involved in creating their art.
On Sunday 13 June between 10 am and 2 pm you can book yourself a visit to any (or ALL) of these studios. Grab your map, plan your route, book your visits to suit yourself on this lovely Sunday outing. |

NANETTE BALCHIN
Discover Nanette’s creative processes with collage stitch mark making and prints. Enjoy her art journals, experimental work and print plates used for recent works on the theme of redness, blueness and whiteness. On display will be her “hands of humanity” collages, sketches and “gloves” created for CQRASN in collaboration with Peta Lloyd. Get the feel of how Nanette works in her studio and the many challenges of coming up with finished works.
Nanette Balchin is a well-respected artist, collaborator and arts advocate. She has exhibited in Central Queensland and beyond for over 15 years and her work continues to evolve in surprising and expressive ways. Her vision is simple: to be authentic, to communicate, to grow, to speak beauty.

PETA LLOYDPerched almost 100 metres above sea level with views to the coast and surrounding hills Peta’s studio has been aptly described as a ‘cabinet of curiosity’, collections of curios are gathered in glass vessels, from bones to china doll heads and everything in-between. Peta engages with printmaking, collage, textiles, artists books, mark making, assemblage, and encaustic techniques, found objects are often incorporated into her artworks.
Peta invites you to explore her studio, peek into her art journals, discover finished artworks and those in progress. Projects such as ‘Hands of Humanity’, created in collaboration with Nanette Balchin and supported by CQRASN will be on display. Since 2007 Peta has exhibited locally and throughout Australia, she inspires others to discover their creativity through teaching art workshops. Connections to people and the environment stimulate Peta, she delights in the energies of found materials and aims to enjoy the process of creating through play. “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.” – Carl Jung

Address: “Toad Hall”. 122 Coowonga Road, Coowonga, Qld, 4702 "Toad Hall" is is approx. 1.22 kms from the Emu Park-Rockhampton Road intersection, it's the first driveway on the right hand side, after the floodway, travelling East on Coowonga Road. Special Instructions: Please park in the marked area just before the bitumen begins on my driveway, your ‘chariot’ will arrive to transport you to my studio at the top of the hill on the hour and half hour. Please be patient and wait for the ‘chariot, to arrive this is to assist with traffic control as our driveway is one lane road. A cup of tea or coffee and a yummy morsel will welcome you to ‘Bower Bird Studio’. |
NOEL BRADY Artist and tutor Noel Brady lives and works in his bush studio just outside Emu Park. He has a Diploma of Art and Design (Ballarat), a teaching degree,(Melbourne), and taught art for more than 30 years in Victoria and Queensland.
Noel retired in 2004 to concentrate on his own artwork, in particular sculpture, using mixed media and found objects. His art practice includes sculpture, ceramics, watercolours, graphics, set design & photography. In 2012-13, Noel’s solo exhibition, ‘Re-tuning the Goanna’, toured regional Queensland with the Queensland Arts Council. In 2015 he worked with other artists and designers on public art for the Emu Park ANZAC Commemorative Precinct. Noel is represented in the Rockhampton Art Gallery and many private collections throughout Queensland and Australia.

Why not find out for yourself. Come & visit this old recycled hippie in his natural habitat. Watch him work away on whatever he is creating this weekend. It could be a recycled wooden assemblage, a ceramic urn. or perhaps some steampunk jewellery. Who knows - even he doesn’t until he wakes up in the morning. BARB TAMASSYDON'T THROW THAT AWAY I CAN USE THAT IN MY ARTWORK!
A phrase commonly heard around Barb’s family and friends when a plate is smashed or a tile broken. Barb is a collector of ‘bits and pieces’ to use in her Mosaic works which she has been creating for the last 20 years. After mosaicing for a number of years, she retired from her teaching career, for a short time, to visit Italy and became inspired to increase her knowledge and skills as a mosaic artist. In 2013 she returned to Italy to Ravenna to participate in a Roman and Byzantine workshop with internationally known mosaic artist, Luciana Notturni. On returning to Australia she continued to work with others helping to develop their skills in mosaics. Working with the community in a range of Mosaic workshops has been a wonderful journey, rewarded by seeing the creativity of others and the joy they express on completing a mosaic. Barb’s workshop is her garage, as well as the Emu Park Art Gallery, where she has been a member for the last 8 years. Her work has been exhibited at the Emu Park Gallery, Mill Gallery and in Montville. Commissioned works include many private homes and the Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. Her colourful letter boxes and bird houses, as well as pictures and pots can be seen around Central Queensland. In 2018 she received the Livingstone Shire Council Australia Day Cultural Award.
