MARK ASHER
Stockyard Rain Dance It appears a recent Stockyard Rain Dance has worked with our recent weather. A storm forming in the west is the focus of our worshipping Hi Viz clad sorcerer. The painting has used visual points to draw the viewers gaze into the moment of capturing nature’s power. It starts with the strong sense of pattern from the stone work, but is supported by the shadow leading the eye toward the main event. Arms outstretched capturing the atmospheric enormity of the building clouds. Capricorn Dreaming Clear waters, clean sandy beaches, largely unpopulated connected to awesome natural elements of weather are the theme here. The Islands around the Capricorn Coast abound in these aspects. The artist has positioned the young woman with outstretched arms to simply draw attention to the grandeur of the Capricorn latitude. GREG BASTIN-BYRNE
My life as a Signwriter and Graphic Designer lead me to paint straight lines and depict my paintings in a commercial sense, whilst adding my feeling for the subject, as a dedicated retiree. I have lived at the Capricorn Coast for 20 years and love the easygoing lifestyle. The "Country Cottage”, I hope sends people to a place away from the madding crowds where you can escape and live your life without the shackles of needling to maintain in a pristine environment. This old cottage has survived many harsh seasons and remains strong and useful and ready for more. Let your mind take you to a place where the patina of something old and isolated is beautiful and inspiring. [email protected] 0407373908 https://www.facebook.com/vicki.bastinbyrne |
LIZA BLACK
My work is heavily influenced by my surroundings, being close to the beaches & swimming pools gives me all the inspiration I need. The key theme being an ongoing study of water & all things associated with swimming & fun times in the sun. I am in pursuit of capturing the pure liquidity of distorted forms created by water & sunlight. Sunlit Swimmers captures days spent swimming and soaking up the beautiful Capricorn sunshine making happy memories of fun times with family & friends. LEAH COGILL
My creative pursuits have always been inspired by the natural world. I grew up with a lot of animals and spent my spare time drawing them and watching them. I love to practice botanical illustration, and recently started to try my hand at landscapes and seascapes. My work reflects my curiosity, love and respect for the natural world and I hope to encourage that in anyone who views it also. I’m most comfortable with a humble graphite pencil, but enjoy the unpredictable, free, fluidity of water colours and alcohol inks. Much like the wildness of natural elements. Through these works I hope to capture the experience of being in water, the quiet tranquillity of water and nature and our human need to be connected to it. SUSANNE DENHAM
I have been making art seriously for the past 10 years but have always had a lifelong love of drawing and appreciating art. Mostly self taught, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge from attending numerous workshops where the tutors have been wonderfully encouraging and generous with sharing their skills and techniques. I enjoy using a number of mediums for my work – watercolour, pastels, collage, papercutting and printmaking. Most of my inspiration comes from what is around me, especially the natural environment, but architecture and the built environment and people also interest me and inspire my art. After 28 years in Barcaldine in Queensland’s Central West I am now living in the “big smoke” of Rockhampton, enjoying the change of scene and new subjects to inspire my work. I am a member of Central Queensland Contemporary Artists group. In 2017 I was awarded Best Overall Artwork prize in the Blackall Art Exhibition, and this year the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum purchased my painting The Critics for their collection. CAROLE ELLIOTT
A local, International award winning Artist, my main love is painting water and ocean life. I have lived a coastal lifestyle for over 35 years and now enjoy walks on our beautiful Capricorn Coast beaches, collecting shells and taking reference photos for future works. I love watching the play of light on the water and through the waves. This is what I try to replicate in my paintings. I’m always trying to push my skills to another level, never allowing myself to become comfortable with what I can achieve. My paintings may show something recognizable, however it is the abstract nature of the scene I am focusing on, whether it is the swirling of the foam on the beach, how to make the shells appear underwater in a slow-moving stream or the sun glinting on a shiny ‘yacht thingy’. In recent years my work has shifted more towards the little things that most people will just walk past. I hope my works will bring people to appreciate the ocean and make them a bit more mindful when they next visit the beach. The two pieces I have on show in this Exhibition are “Sunshine and Seashells” which is a treasured moment of beach-combing with our daughter, and “Pink Hibiscus” which are often frequented by the gorgeous little sunbirds in our garden. My next exhibition will be with local, award winning Artist Catherine Boreham at Fig Tree Gallery in August 2024. KIARA FOLLENT
Painting + Mixed Media Artist Kiara Follent (1994) is an Emerald based artist who works mainly in acrylic, ink, pencil and watercolour. A theme that runs through Kiara’s work is the use of pattern, strong use of colour and abstract subjects, surrounding vision and light. Peaceful Vista Artist Statement This is painted from the last photo taken at the end of a short-day trip to Yeppoon. I walk that started at and some food at a Normanby Street Café and then a walk along Yeppoon Main Beach along with many others enjoying their own day on the beach. Then hoped into the car for a drive along the coastal road down to Emu Park. Taking a stop to see the Singing Ship and take along The Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Walk and finally walking out along the old pier and enjoying the peace before heading back into Rockhampton and finally back home to Emerald the next morning. SUSAN R HEAD
I enjoy taking realistic forms and converting them into stylized shapes and patterns with an emphasis on line and colour. I see patterns in nature and objects around me. I like to respond to these through the lino block printing process which I have been using continuously since 2007. I sometimes utilise water-colour inks and collage in my lino art works. ‘Her favourite top’ is the 5th lino cut in my series of garments. It is reminiscent of the sea and warm sun due to the content and colour used in the art work. [email protected] 0438395437 https://www.facebook.com/EmuParkArtGallery |
ANN HINTON
I have loved painting as long as I can remember and experimented with oils and water colours a little bit, trying to teach myself during my school years and working life. By the time I retired I knew that it was watercolour that I wanted to pursue and started learning at Brian Kehoe's watercolour lessons in 2012. While attending Brian's classes for about seven years I also travelled away and attended wonderful workshops conducted by John Lovett, Lucy and Barry McCann, Ross Paterson, David Taylor and lastly Deb Mostert and Tricia Reust at the RQAS Rockhampton. Although I can't recall everything I was taught at these workshops I have taken on the things from each that have resounded with me and the way I want to paint (my style). I have been a member of RQAS Rockhampton since the Deb Mostert workshop in April 2019 and have been exhibiting and taking part in their painting competition challenges ever since. I love nature and colour and when I come across something which attracts me, I am inspired to try and capture the light, colour and whatever else draws me to reproduce it on paper. My style is fairly loose and I love the transparency and subtleness of watercolour. The learning process continues with each new painting and I find that experience exhilarating and very beneficial for my mind and well-being in general. Art is a part of me and I am compelled to keep creating as long as I am able. [email protected] 0428 324895 |
CHARLEEN HOFMANN - CharlysArt
I've nurtured a deep passion for art for as long as I can recall, and I owe much of my inspiration to my mother. Guided by her creative spirit, from a young age I explored diverse artistic avenues, experimenting with various techniques and materials that laid the foundation for my artistic expression. Growing up in the vibrant city of Berlin, Germany, I carried my artistic passion with me when I made the life-changing move to Australia in 2016. Settling in Rockhampton and later in the coastal haven of Yeppoon, I found myself living out a dream — a dream of being close to the ocean, a constant source of inspiration and tranquillity for me. In 2021, I took a more professional stride in my artistic pursuits. Establishing a presence on social media by creating my own artist profiles and selling my work at local markets marked a significant chapter in my art journey. Watercolours became my chosen medium, a magical tool that allows me to capture the essence of my emotions and experiences on paper. Earlier this year, I rekindled my passion for pottery upon joining the Yeppoon Beach Potters. It was within the welcoming embrace of clay that my hands found a new form of expression. Working with clay, moulding it into functional vessels, has brought a new aspect to my art. The blend of watercolours and pottery forms a seamless connection, telling stories through every stroke and curve, expressing my passion and artistic journey. "Keppel Sea Breeze," is a wind chime crafted from clay, capturing not only the fluidity of the sea but also its coastal breeze. Meanwhile, my watercolour piece, "Floating," captures the serene joy of floating in the ocean. Both artworks reflect the meditative experience of being one with nature. The colours blend and flow, mirroring the harmonious union between the human spirit and the vast expanse of the sea. LYNETTE HOWARD
Born and raised in Mackay Lyn started her teaching career there and taught in many Central Queensland towns. In the early seventies she put down roots in Rockhampton where her two daughters were born. Towards the end of a long career in education Lyn took her first tentative steps into art. It didn’t take her long to realise that whilst this ‘art’ is addictive there are more questions than there appear to be answers. Lyn soon realised that, for her, the best thing to do was to paint on her own and ‘just have a go’. Trying to develop her own style was full of red herrings. Just when she thought she was onto something Lyn would realise that it was all wrong. She discovered that the first thing she needed to do was to focus on the composition and get the drawing right. Developing her art practice using a variety of media has been her mail focus for many years. Over the years Lyn has had stints at TAFE, participated in many weekend workshops and visited many art galleries to help herself grow as an artist. Three mantras are now guiding her practice.
Lyn has also carved ‘Relief’ pieces such as a sunflower, arum lily, cat, platypus and elephant’s head. She most recently attended a weekend wood carving workshop with Hiroshi Yamaguchi as tutor in Canberra. Hiroshi is a master woodworker with Koitoya Design Studio. This gave Lyn an insight into one of Japan’s cultural traditional methods of carving into green wood. Lyn is keen to continue to further develop her painting and wood carving practices. JET JAMES
Jet James is a well-known figure in the Yeppoon art scene and is celebrated for his exceptional contributions to printmaking, painting, and mixed media. Having burst onto the artistic landscape at the age of 20, Jet quickly garnered recognition, not only locally but on a global scale, earning accolades and awards in Australia and overseas. What sets Jet's work apart is his innovative use of multimedia, breathing life into his creations. His artistic process is notably intuitive, with each piece evolving organically as he engages with the canvas. Often influenced by the picturesque town of Yeppoon, Jet's creations often reflect the natural beauty of the landscapes, the richness of human experiences, and the landmarks that define the area. Jet James has seamlessly transitioned from a rising talent to a renowned Australian artist, designer, and the proud proprietor of the Jet James Art Gallery nestled in the heart of Yeppoon. The gallery not only serves as a showcase for Jet's captivating artwork and merchandise but also offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the artist at work. Stepping into the Jet James Art Gallery is an invitation to explore the vibrant world of a visionary creator, where each stroke of the brush tells a story, and every piece is a testament to Jet's artistic journey. "Road to Wreck Point" is a captivating exploration of memory and place, rendered on cast-coated paper with Indian ink and layers of oil paint. Inspired by intimate studies of Cooee Bay, the artwork employs a distorted stylization to evoke the essence of the locale. The fusion of meticulous detailing and emotive abstraction invites viewers to traverse the intricate pathways of recollection, creating a visual narrative that resonates with the profound connections between personal experience and the landscape. "Dancing Lights on Ross Creek" is an evocative mixed media piece that unfolds on cast coated paper through the interplay of Indian ink and layers of oil paint. Executed en plein air, the initial rendering in black ink captures the essence of the locale, a process photographs could not encapsulate. The vibrant hues and atmospheric details spring from the artist's memory, infusing the work with a unique blend of spontaneity and emotional resonance, inviting viewers to share in the experience of a moment suspended in time. MARCIE JENKINS
“Gandali’s Day Out” Gandali is my favourite animal at the Rockhampton Zoo. I painted the background blue to represent his favourite blue blanket. The pink represents the memory of his mum, Holly who passed away having him at the age of 34. I imagined Gandali, wearing glasses as his disguise and eating a delicious Gelatissimo icecream on a hot summer's day in Capricornia. TRACEY KENNEDY
Tracey is a mostly self-taught artist living in Yeppoon, Queensland, with a love of depicting the unique local land and seascapes, flora and fauna, usually from her own reference photos. Other subjects she loves are animal and botanical portraits as well as figures in the landscape, sometimes done in a series of works in mixed formats. Her passion is painting pretty pictures in her favourite medium of oil paint either in soft built-up layers or in a more immediate and textured way with a palette knife. Tracey is constantly inspired by the light and colour of the tropical sunrise, sunsets, and storm clouds; from the beaches and offshore islands to the lush hinterland with its extinct volcanic mountains and everything in between and beyond. KRISTINE LANYON
I won my First Art Prize in Yr 7 with `The Cave of the Purple Headed Geek’. I never forgot the excitement and wonder of winning with a painting that was my choice. Jumping in and out of art opportunities, workshops over the years has now led to painting my choices again with friends. It is a luxury to spread paint over a blank canvas and acrylic paint suits me for its drying time as impatience plays a part ☺. I love painting forests with dappled light, seascapes, cloudy skies, beaches, people and just about anything that takes my fancy…..so lucky ☺ [email protected] 0409344238 INSTAGRAM: krislanyon_art |
TARA LEWIS
Tara Lewis was born in the seventies, Brisbane and has practiced art throughout childhood. After leaving school she studied art and design, then moved to Emerald Queensland 2010 allowing her to reconnect with painting and now enjoying participating in local art events. Each painting is an exploration, challenge, and reward to express a moment of energy at each stage of the painting. “I am trying to find what I love and leave behind what does not bring me joy, searching for something new and fresh each painting.” In the playful line between energy and calmness, my acrylic paintings assist as a visual journey into the spaces of the intangible. “Working intuitively from memory, feeling, sketches and photos, I use this as a starting point for a painting then allow it to evolve and take its own journey.” Having a limitless fascination with the relationship of colour and form, each painting searches to exceed the boundaries of representation, inviting observers into a space where emotions and energies come together. Each developing series is to explore and push each painting in a newly discovered place. Often expressed through interesting tools, colour palette or using collage, then building up layers and removing some back allowing the process to evolve organically. A new series brings a new palette, each stroke of acrylic paint is an expression between hues, a conversation that evolves with each layer. Either to contrast or compliment bold and harmonious colours. The home studio has countless rows of jars with various sized brushes and utensils being the tools of the trade. Exploring new marks with a new baking or plastering tool is just part of the process. Working with mixed media of acrylic paint, charcoal, ink, graphite, and oil pastels to create interesting layers. The artwork is abstract in essence, a painting emerges from a process of intuitive creation. Shapes and lines meet and deviate, forming involved patterns and mark making that escape explanation. The canvas becomes a space for experimentation, where the ebb and flow of the acrylic medium give opportunities to unexpected textures and compositions. Prospering in the remoteness and solitude of living and working in Central Queensland. “There is something special about the Central Highlands landscape and environment and is rich in inspiration.” The contrast of the environment is explored in her work from the dry harshness of the bush to the abundant beautiful flora and fauna, the vastness and calmness of the Dam, the bowen basin with layers of sedimentary rock to the Emerald botanical gardens alive with activity and the Nogoa River that runs through it, not forgetting fossicking in Sapphire and enjoying the trees and birds in her back yard. All combine to make an archive of feelings, images and experiences of nature and the energy of the land to paint for ten lifetimes. CORAL MORRIS
Award winning local artist grew up in the small town of Springsure in the Central Highlands. It was a time when kids had the freedom to roam and explore their surroundings, create adventures and let their imagination take flight. From sketching and playing around with water colour from an early age Coral always yearned to take up painting seriously when the time was right. In 1989 Coral moved to Rockhampton and had the opportunity to follow her heart and explore her creative journey. She started art classes at TAFE and later joined Royal Qld. Art Society in 1992. She went on to become volunteer tutor for the Society in 1996 to 2016, achieving life member of RQAS Inc in 2006. GEOFF MULVEY
In my artistic exploration, I find profound inspiration in the intricate interplay of Australia's diverse elements — the vibrant flora, weathered historical structures, and the rhythmic expanse of the ocean. Each brushstroke encapsulates the rich textures and hues, weaving a visual tapestry that celebrates the nuanced beauty of this multifaceted landscape. My art is an homage to the delicate harmony between nature's resilience, historical character, and the ever-changing forces of the ocean, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the complex interconnection that defines Australia's captivating wilderness. BARBARA PRICE-REES
I was intrigued by my grandmother's life-like portraits deftly painted in oils from an early age. These paintings inspired me to follow in her footsteps. I gain personal enjoyment in experimenting with different materials and aim to inspire others by sharing the skills that I have accumulated through my art classes. When other people are ignited with the same passion from my tuition, it brings me great satisfaction. The beautiful environment of Yeppoon, Qld. is influential on my artwork. The ‘Shell Series’ of paintings (12), were initiated by my mother’s gift to me of a box of shells. ALANA READ
“Red Boat at Ross Creek” This striking red boat moored in Ross Creek at low tide, caught my eye when driving over the bridge one day. The way it was reflected in the calm water inspired me to capture this popular local scene in watercolour. The warm glowing rays of sunlight, the cool deep shadows and shimmering water encapsulate Yeppoon’s casual coastal lifestyle. The use of Winsor & Newton professional quality watercolours on Arches cotton rag, ensure the archival quality of this work. “Afternoon at Cooee Bay Beach” Enjoying a late afternoon stroll along Cooee Bay Beach is one of my favourite things to do to relax, because I become absorbed by the sounds of the gentle waves, the sand in my toes and the view across to North Keppel Island. As a keen observer of these seemingly simple moments often taken for granted, I enjoy capturing that feeling in watercolour, which by its very nature is the best suited medium for this. MICHELLE TARANTO
(17/08/89, Port Hedland, Australia) Michelle is an emerging Australian artist, commencing her art practice in 2021. She lives in Yeppoon, Queensland. In 2023, she created her art business ‘Arco Iris Interiors’ where she offers colourful original artworks and hopes to expand into fashion and interior décor to cater for those who love colourful, eclectic and maximal style and decor. Michelle's work is colourful, joyous and energetic, ranging from abstract plant art to expressive dog portraits and sometimes whimsical combinations of both. She is inspired by the rainbow (arco iris: Spanish) palette of Latin America where she travelled as a young woman. She also draws inspiration for her artworks from her hundreds of houseplants and cacti, her beloved Black Labrador, Tobi and her Chihuahuas, Pablo and Chiquita. Michelle’s first solo art exhibition and debut as an artist in the Yeppoon community, 'Happy At Home' at the Fig Tree Galleries was a phenomenal hit and was exceptionally received during the month of October 2023. In the same month, Michelle won her first art award, receiving First Prize for the Easel Works Section of the Martin Hanson Art Awards for her self-portrait ‘Modern Mother’. EYES ON THE PRIZE - ARTWORK DESCRIPTION In this playful piece, there is a cool Black Labrador, eyes wide with wonder, catching a glimpse of a rainbow ice cream cone melting away in the heat of a Yeppoon summer day. It's a whimsical scene of colours and canine curiosity, set against the backdrop of Yeppoon's iconic statue on Main Beach, with The Keppels in the distance. I hope my artwork invites you to join in the light-hearted moment, where his joy and the melting ice cream create a delightful feeling of summer sensations and you can allow the scene whisk you away to a carefree world where time slows down, and the only thing that matters is savouring the simple sweetness of the moment. I am a reasonably new painter and have been enjoying exploring and finding my way in the artist world particularly with acrylic paints. My submission for Summer In Capricorn gave me an opportunity to create on my canvas a vision that I see along our beautiful Capricorn Coastline. Bright sunshine clear blue sky's with white drifting clouds drifting above, a sea of many emerald green hues and rolling waves tipped with the white of the crest, a golden beach dotted with families swimming, splashing in the shallows, seeking shade under umbrellas or the overhanging branch of our Pandanus trees. A beautiful Summer Day on the Capricorn Coast. [email protected] 0474922105 Facebook BOLD Blooms |
LINDA WEEDON
Following successful careers in retail and finance, I chose to pursue a simpler lifestyle, investing more in myself and my art. I’m a self taught artist with a passion for living things and capturing character in my pieces. Working in acrylics, oils, pastels and various monochrome mediums, my primary body of work is pet portraiture. Living on the Capricorn Coast provides unlimited inspiration for my work. The challenge is finding enough hours in the day to paint all the beautiful things I want to. "Former Glory" The board in this piece was discarded at the local tip, recovered to be remembered in this scene. I wanted to acknowledge the rubbished surf board's glorious past, where it was beautiful, exciting and in it's prime. As I did when I painted this, I encourage others to consider their own perceived glory days. Have they been, are they now, are they still to come? This board returns to it's former glory, just in a different way. "Beach Days are Best Days" Inspired by the joy of a visit to the beach with, and by, a dog. I aimed to create this piece from the dog's perspective...what summer fun looks and feels like for a Cap Coast dog. The featured mini-beachscape of Kemp beach and hill is a favourite local summer spot for my own dogs and I. Quite simply, this is a painting of a happy place. JOANNE WOOD
I am inspired by the seaside and the ocean. By its perpetual motion and ability to create calmness in the soul. My piece “Oceans Treasure” is a turtle handmade in clay, fired to 1000 degrees in an electric kiln and then used an ancient technique to refire in a pit with local timber and a combination of chemicals. I have applied a sealant to preserve the colours created on the clay. [email protected] 0455689979 Instagram #joannewoodpottery Facebook Joanne Wood Pottery |
